In many manufacturing and production processes, in mobile machines and in the area of renewable energies encoders have become established as reliable instruments to ensure precise positioning. They convert rotary movement into digital signals. Encoders use the wear-free photoelectric or magnetic detection. A pulse disc firmly attached to the shaft or a movable magnet carrier ensures this detection.
A distinction is made between incremental and absolute encoders.
Incremental encoders generate a precisely defined number of pulses per revolution. They are a measure of the angular or linear distance moved.
Absolute encoders provide an absolute numerical value for each angular position even over several revolutions.

Incremental encoders generate a precisely defined number of pulses per revolution. They are a measure of the angular or linear distance moved. The phase difference between the signals A and B, which are shifted by 90 °, allows evaluation of the direction of rotation.

IFM Incremental encoders with display

Their high accuracy and robust design make encoders with magnetic detection an ideal choice for harsh industrial applications.
Resolution and signal level can be programmed. The encoders have a wide voltage range of 4.5…30 V DC and are therefore suited for universal use.
PerformanceLine encoders have an integrated signal evaluation for speed monitoring, counter functions and detection of the direction of rotation.
The current position value is indicated on a bright LED display. The settings are made via operating keys on the unit and an intuitive menu navigation.
Diagnostic and parameter data are reliably transferred via IO-Link.

IFM Absolute singleturn encoders

Absolute encoders provide an absolute numerical value for each angular position even over several revolutions.
Singleturn encoders divide a mechanical revolution into a certain number of measuring steps. The measuring values are repeated after one complete revolution.

IFM Absolute multiturn encoders

Absolute encoders provide an absolute numerical value for each angular position even over several revolutions.
Multiturn encoders, however, do not only detect absolute angular positions but also count revolutions. Even after a voltage failure and system restart, the current position is quickly and reliably detected. The signals are output via an SSI interface or a fieldbus interface such as CAN or Profibus.
